Hypnosis
The
fears, myths and mystery surrounding the use of hypnosis
are totally undeserved. There is absolutely no question
of being controlled or manipulated, or even induced into
a deep trance state. A person in hypnosis
is not 'asleep', indeed they are often more aware of what
is taking place than normal. Nobody can be made to do anything
against their will, and anybody (with a very few exceptions)
can enter this deeply relaxed state.
What then is hypnosis? Well, it is a state
of deep relaxation, a state of heightened awareness, at
one with a feeling of calm lethargy. It can best be described
as being very similar to that first moment of waking, that
is, aware of what is happening around you, but just not
wanting to be bothered to move! However, two of its characteristics
are a heightened susceptibility to beneficial suggestion
and a much improved memory with access to 'forgotten' or
repressed memories stored in the unconscious of the mind.
It is these qualities of the hypnotic state that can be
readily used for therapeutic purposes. In itself the hypnotic
state is very pleasant, but nothing more than that. It is
a tool used by therapists, not a cure in itself.

IN BRIEF - Questions and Answers
What is Hypnosis ? It is a state of relaxation and concentration
at one with a state of heightened awareness.
Are drugs used ? No, just the human voice.
Shall I be aware of what is happening ? Yes. The predominant
feeling of most people is "It didn't work
for me, I never went under." You will just feel very pleasantly
relaxed, like when you first wake.
Could I be made to do anything against my will or nature
? No. This is a professional, therapeutic practice, with
hypnosis as the tool for fast and effective change. It has
no connection with stage or television entertainment using
hypnosis.
Is there any cause for concern ? No, hypnosis is a proven
therapeutic tool. A journalist called Robert Temple set
out to investigate hypnosis and hypnotherapy and to expose
all its dangers - he wrote a book called 'Open to Suggestion'
which has only praise and good things to say about hypnosis
and its use, despite his initial intention. Only 14 pages
out of 449 give details of dangerous situations, and these
were all under controlled conditions, such as military experiments
in the USA and USSR.
